My mission

Newly bought multicopters are generally quite ugly as they come out of the box. Either they look similar to malformed white GRP amoebas or are like black carbon insects from a distant SciFi galaxy. Obviously an adaptation to the tastes of male Chinese, where 95% of all the drones bought here a produced.

This together with the omnipresent goggle-eyed camera (“The Eye”) and the obtrusive racket in flight does not exactly endear them to the general public. This has to change!
Model aeroplanes or helicopters on the other hand often appeal visually as true to scale and lovingly copied original planes or choppers.
Which of course is not very well possible with multicopters, since no prototypes exist in the history of aviation.

This is the reason, why a lot more creativity and imagination in the design of the NEW drone has to provide for acceptance with those people who are not male and younger than thirty years of age!
Such alternatives can hardly apply to the underlying technology – such as motors, propellers, flight controller or battery – , because these are largely developed or dependent on progress in expensive basic research.
But only to changes in the design of the outer appearance such as the shape of the frame, of LED lights, colours and sounds.

It is about time, considering the large popularity of trends such as DIY, hobby, maker and modding, that multicopters are also caught up by them. A lot more can be done with the countless seldom flown and deadly boring quadrocopters in hobby basements and high up on boys wardrobes.
Let us fashion the hobby drone colourful and imaginative, so that the commercial drones, that soon will crowd our skies, do not alarm and frighten us, but delight and create happiness.

And there already exist a few famous examples such as the multicopter light show at this years SuperBowl by Intel or at the Chinese new year festivities. Those cost many thousands of dollars, but it is possible for much less.

With cardboard, Styrofoam, balsa wood, paper mâché, Epoxy and fabrics, felt, feathers or paints and some creativity everyone can fashion the outer appearance of the copter completely after his or her own taste. LED strips managed by the flight controller can conjure up the most fantastic light effects especially on an evening sky. Last not least the sound: basic mouth organs from plastic can elicit the strangest sounds in flight.

For all that only ONE thing matters: the weight or better the lightness of the design, because each ounce the copter has to lift in addition to itself, is one ounce too much. The trick therefore is to create as much fantasy as possible with as little weight increase as necessary.
